View Full Version : Caring for polished floor boards, how?

We settle on our house on Friday and the first job, before we move furniture, is a clean of the floors. All of the rooms except the kitchen, bathroom and 1 bedroom are polished floor boards, oak I think. I was just wondering how I should clean and care for them? The current owners have already moved away so I can't ask them and Google searches just say to use what the manufacturer of the finish recommends.

So, what does everyone recommend? I want to give them a wash when we move in, and what do I do to keep the shine on them (without making them slippery)?

I would like to carpet before next winter, but Mrs. BLWNHR is going to take some convincing!

Pics of the boards (from the web listing) are attached. And don't worry, the ranch panelling in the dining area will be the first to go!

If the finish is two-pack, kerosene will keep it looking good. Just a very small amount on a mop, and lightly wiped over about once a fortnight will do. It may be best to test a small area first to make sure what the finish is.

Best advice I got from my floor sander was to put door mats at every door and get a sabco broom.

Cap of metho in warm water & wring out mop. Kero was used in days gone by to dull floors & your house will stink.
Felt on your moving furniture. No dogs.cats, kids or friends until you scratch it first!

Don't protect it, let it scratch and scuff up and look daggy, then selling the idea of carpeting it will be easier!!!!
