View Full Version : Sealing the ends of old hardwood posts?

I've got a few of these old house stumps around the place.
I've used 2 for gate posts and just put another one in as a feature with the new deck I'm building.

As expected they're starting to crack and split at the top from being exposed.
Is there a sort of resin you can pour on to the end and in to the cracks to seal it a bit?
Something along the lines of what they use to fill cracks when making benchtops and tables from hardwood slabs?

I don't want to cap them with a tin cap or anything like that.

I use bitumen based waterproofing for tops of fenceposts. It's very flexible so can handle any movement in the splits and you can apply it as thick as you want. Make sure you get a UV resistant one. If you use resin, once the water gets between the resin and the existing splitting it will prob just compount the problem IMHO.

bitumen based waterproofing

Is that a clear liquid?
I'll go enquire about it at my local paint and chemical place tomorrow.

its black and looks like bitumen. Looks like you want it for a feature post, I'd suggest a stainless cap or something? Not sure you'll find a clear cover that is still flexible but I could be wrong...

Yeah well one is a featuer post and the other two are gate posts.
Maybe if I fill the cracks with that stuff and get something else to seal the top....?

that might work, just force it down the cracks, scrape the top and sand top when dry? Let me know how it turns out.
