Hi guys,

Ok so doing your regular bathroom reno and I have come across a problem with the slab in there. Seems most of the slab is barely more than an inch/inch and half across the floor. It is the original location of the bathroom, no wall changes have occurred (I have the original plans) Its a 1970's house.

Now I can't work out if it was there from original or done as part of a reno done some time before I bought the house about 5 years ago.

I've started to see about getting a structural/building engineer in to have a look and give guidence. But I thought I would hit some forums and see if any others have had this issue and did they just end up finding it localized to a single room and pulled the floor and redid the slab correctly.

Could really do with some thoughts. At this point in time I am looking to hit the floor some more in the next couple of days, open it up a bit more and also try and see how far in the house this goes.

Pictures attached, you can see the hole, you can also see there are some bricks in the soil under the slab.

I'm a bit lost for why someone would even do this.

It looks like it was layed over a fill that has been washed away over the years. There also seems to be a footing below the wall with a bit of exposed reo, which suggests the edge of the footin may have been chopped away at some time. There also seems to be no mesh or reo in the slab. All in all, it looks like a shoddy reno, or shoddy work by the original builder. You are very wise to be calling in an engineer.

Hi,

There is regular 10mm rebar in the main slab. I can see some running parallel to the slab under the wall, hard to see in the pic sorry. The soild under the thin slab in the bath has been moved by myself to get an idea on what is under there. The bricks in the soil below the wall and joining the slab are setup in a footing type method, though I don't know why.

I have contacted an engineer just waiting for some sort of reply... waits.. waits...

Anyway thanks for the response, I will come back with what they say.
