what way does total alkilinity normally go? up or down?
and how do i adjust it to within the range it is suppose to be when it goes out? if that with what they call buffer??
this is the last thing i think i need to learn in maintaining my salt water pool with chlorinator.
i can now measure and adjust PH levels pretty well, i can now measure and adjust salt levels pretty well, i can now measure and adjust chlorine levels pretty well.
just not sure about alkilinity.
mine is currently around 110 and that is ok. but how to adjust when it goes out and what way does it normally go out?

Hi,

You do indeed add buffer, sodium bicarbonate. The TA level will drop over time.

110 is quite a good level for your pool, in some salt water pools it is hard to get TA much above 80 or 90, which is just OK.

Cheers

cool, so i think i am now all set to go to look after my own pool without having to pay someone monthly to come check it all.
anything else i need to know or do apart from above?

Hi,

I think just some stuff to know about green algae. Spores of this come in with dust and leaves etc, and can give some pools terrible trouble. There are 3 common types of green algae killer, quaternary ammonium salts, benzalkonium chloride, and copper salts. They are different prices and effectiveness.

I have been using benzalkonium chloride, and it hasn't stopped the green algae. I am off up to the pool shop to get advice. I think the pool has gathered phosphate algae nutrient from leaves and other crap, and needs an algae "starver" added, but I can't test for that myself.

Cheers
