folks, we are in deagon, a post war fibro (pronounced "asbestos") cottage area on the north side of brisbane. some time ago, someone clad the fibro with really bad vinyl weatherboard with polystyrene for insulation. we were going to rip it all off and replace with real weatherboard but now are considering buying elsewhere and renting this place out (if we win the lotto, ofcourse). so now, what i want to do is still get rid of the vinyl cladding but replace it with some sort of weatherboard looking cement sheeting. i have seen the hardiplank stuff but really wanted to be able to use big sheets to make my job easier. does anybody know of any product that might fit the bill?

I have hardiplank on my house in NSW but the 450mm wide stuff not the smaller 300mm. I just comopleted an extension and found it really easy to flix. I think it was around 11 panels high taking into account the overlap.

If the current cladding is solid and tight and won't contribute to major maitenance issues down the track then leave it well alone. Replacing it won't increase the rental vale. Oh and big sheets don't necessarily make for an easier job...

The current cladding is perfect for a rental property, very low maintenance. is it possible to just tidy it up.
Are you certain you are not going to over capitalise ???
Sounds expensive if you are going to also remove the asbestos sheeting before re cladding.
Cladding an entire house will not be cheap either, I used weathertex on one 2 years ago and
cladding alone came to 7 grand.

ouch, 7 grand is alot. how big was the house? ours is a two bedroom place i was not going to actually remove the asbestos as there is nothing wrong with it. just get rid of the vinyl rubbish and put the new stuff on over the old. preference was tending towards the thinner width planks as we currently live here and we had, before the neighbours moved in, thought might be our last move for some years to come. i like the linea stuff and thought there might be other products like it.

I have just removed all of our Aluminium cladding from our little 3 bedroom house, leaving the asbestos fibro underneath and replaced with weathertex federation smooth 170mm cladding. 120sqm was ordered at $22 per 3.6m length, came to about $2300 all up. I still need to paint it but I love the look of it.

Real weatherboards are much cheaper. I am in Melbourne but as example, one place sells primed on the inside, baltic pine boards for $2.20per lineal m (pack lots), to $2.30 per lineal m (selected lengths).
