Tile underlay underneath shower tray??

G'day Brian,

Tile underlay over a timber floor prevents movement so the tiles don't pop off. you could get away without it under the shower tray but the risk is not small, shower trays have a bad history of developing leaks around that area due to movement after some years.

Common practice is to sheet and waterproof the whole floor, you will sleep better.

By the way, any waterproofer can make you a shower base of any size or shape you fancy, and for not a lot of money, leaving you with a lower step to get in and out and tile finish that will outlast a plastic tray.

PS. If you go with the plastic tray make sure it's supported underneath to stop any movement.

Also never use an abrasive cleaning product on the surface as the fine scratches will hold mould and after a time stain the base. This is not a problem with non abrasive chemical cleaners.

Thank you very much for your reply. I think i will put underlay beneath the tray, but as regard tiling the floor - does the underlay have to be waterproofed in anyway??

Yes, the full floor and wall to floor joint will need waterproofing then fit the tray, this will then be over-flashed on both sides and up the internal corner. This ensured the timber floor and tile underlay never gets wet
