Hi Guys. Hope someone can point me in the right direction. I am in the process of replastering a master bedroom. Have filled the studs with polyester acoustic insulation (r 1.5 for internals, 2.5 for external) and have hit a problem. Stud to brick gap is approx 25-30mm on external wall. Even though the Insulation is quite rigid, I am finding it is flexing back onto the brickwork in some parts. Have tried strapping, but even that flexes, no matter how tight i get it. Have thought about using some thinner pine battens and to run them horizontally, but that will push my insulation out against the plaster and I would have to thin it out.... these r 2.5's are 90mm.,,,,

so that leads me to wall wrap.... I Purchased some non-breathable stuff and before I open it up, what options do I have? is my gap to small to be effective as a thermal barrier. Will the poly touching the wrap make it useless? Is non-breathable the correct wrap? Have done a bit of reading but it is getting a bit to confusing. would like to sheet asap... please help. :?

cheers

s.r

Wrap at back of studs is fine simply staple on. 25-30 mm is OK too.

Also depends on what you are trying to do. Are you trying to keep the batts away from the brickwork (a good idea), or change the insulation "mix" you are using given the available gap?

If the first, I've used packaging tape (the blue plastic stuff that is used to tie heavy cartons together; not a stickytape) on the outside of the timber frame, running horizontally as you describe. This I wrapped around to the inside face of the timber at each end and stapled. About 1 strip every top and bottom-ish of insulation is fine, the number of tape strips is a bit driven by the way your noggins are placed, and therefore the placement of your insulation.

I've also been told that breathable wrap is a better idea with brick veneer, to allow a certain transfer of moisture, in this case inside to outside. No doubt Bloss can elaborate!

Breathable wrap is used on weatherboards, non breathable for bricks like you have. Try and cut in sections and use the foil clips to attach to studs. You are suppose to have a gap between studs and bricks.
