View Full Version : Framing for external door plus sidelight

I am adding a room on a bare concrete slab floor, and am hoping to include a standard size external door (glazed in solid merbau) 2040 x 820 x 40 with a matching full height sidelight 2040 x 400 beside it. I am planning to tile the floor inside the room (say 10mm deep). The external walls are to be 90mm timber frame, with plasterboard inside and wrc boards outside.

I am trying to work out three things -

1. If I can put a full-width timber sill across the bottom of both - this would be easiest but I am concerned it will need to be quite shallow, especially if sloped to the outside, or there will be too big a lip inside the doorway to trip over.

2. What should I use as the central pillar between the two and how should I stabilise it if I don't use a timber sill (the latch side of the door will be against the sidelight).

3. Do I use a standard door jamb set for both the door and the sidelight to help them match better.

I's appreciate any thoughts

Thanks, Gado

more info needed. is there a door there now? need to check in roof to see if its load bearing wall as you may need to install a lintle above the door so the roof doesnt collapse or bow ontop of your new door.

Thanks barney118 for quick reply. There is no wall or roof there yet - only fresh air above the slab floor. I will be building the wall with lintel over the new doorway and it will be supporting a colorbond roof extension from the existing house.

Meanwhile I have found that Corinthian do sell a door frame for the door/sidelight combination (1296 wide) but it has a 30mm timber sill along the bottom. I am worried this will be dangerous to trip over, as there is a 170mm step down from the room to the outside.

I'd prefer to tile through from the room under the door without any lip, apart from slight fall for drainage and a weatherstrip under the door. If I do this, I don't know the best way to secure the vertical timber between the door and the sidelight.

I guess I could put a thin bottom plate under the sidelight to set it at the same height as the door, and tile up to it.
