Hi all

some advise if you are able to help

Recently buit a deck witha roof, at the back of the house, deck was in Grey iron back.

Have left an area of 1200 mm wide x 2400 mm long on one side to put the BBQ so as to allow the smoke etc to get away.

For effect i want to lay some boards on the framework to close it in a bit but still keep it open.

My problem is i was unsure about using ironbark on the roof for a couple of reasons

1. I will some how have to get up there and oil it every 12 mths or so, to stop it going grey and therfore not matching my deck.

2. How to fix it

Have thought about using a composit timber but they manufacturers have told me it may sagg and the colour match is not great

If i do put up Ironbark would i be best to nail it up, (so as you cannot see the nails as much) as if i screw them, like i have done on the deck, i am scared the screws will stand out too much, but will nails hold it up?

Also will water sit on top of the boards and rot them out?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated

To fix it, place on top of rafters so you can fix it down to them. Use materials that can span the rafter spacing (i'm guessing 600 or more?).

Thanks Shauck

but i want a look that hides the rafters so i want to put the boards on thr underside of the rafters

I think i will nail them up and if that does not work i can always scre them up later on

If it's level, and it looks like it is, the water will cause you problems, especially where the board beneath is attached to the rafter
Even if it's not level water will be a problem if you give it a place to rest on the wood, the other worry is leaf litter

you can work around this by adding a spacer between to allow water to run away and ease in cleaning with a leaf blower etc
you can even use uneven spacers to promote the run off if the rafters are level
you could put some roofing above to protect it but i think that defeats the purpose and the effect you're looking for

The problem I see is that the rafters run in the same direction as the deck so you need to add battens to allow a better match to the deck below
I don't know if you already thought of that but I'm not too sure you'd be happy with the ceiling panels perpendicular to the flooring

to address your two issues
1. you will have to get up there and oil it every so often but the surface you look at will not weather like the deck
it's in the shade, out of the rain and no body walks on it
If the BarBQ is under it you'll have other issues

2. How to fix it? IMO screws

Put three coats of exterior acrylic paint on the top surface before you fit them
