View Full Version : Which timber for grey deck

This forum is amazing!

I am going to deck a big chunk of my back garden. I don't like the brown/red look of oiled decking (yes, I'm weird, I know). I want a weathered grey look, like a pier.

Other things I'm looking for:

To avoid rainforest-raped timber (as I see it called on here :U)
A timber that's not splintery underfoot as I have a disabled child who spends a lot of time on the ground
A good quality long-lasting timber.

So, recommendations for timber. Also, will letting the deck weather seriously impact it's longevity?

Many thanks in advance for your collective wisdom.

If you use a timber that greys nicely and coat with Cutek CD50 untinted, you can protect the timber and let it go grey. I haven't used it yet (will) but do a search on it and you'll see it gets some great rap. Ironbark as a timber choice? Not sure about splintery tho. Someone?

Yeah, given the criteria, spotted gum with clear Cutek CD50 would be a good choice.

Hi Melbmeg , I am a timber merchant and I thought I might offer some comments.
It is good to see someone not wanting Merbau and the red look.
Consider Silver Top Ash as it fits the bill for the look you need. This product is a class 2 and the timber is fire rated.
In my opinion you should coat every timber outside. If you want to have the natural look as the timber ages, I would consider Cutek Clear.
This product will protect your timber and allow it to grey with age. Click on the link to learn more about Cutek. Coatings & Protection :: Carrolls Wholesale Timber (http://carrollswholesale.com/products/cutek/)
If you let me know where you are I will find your local Cutek Dealer.
I hope this helps
