My brother's house has a weird step in his kitchen that looks rather like an mc escher drawing. It's about 50mm or so high, and slopes gently back for about a metre. The rest of the kitchen is flat, and adjoins the rest of the house level. I could never figure out quite how it was done, but I trip over that damn thing every time I visit.
They finally decided once and for all to pull it up to see why that ridiculous step was there, and repair it. The kitchen was originally a concrete slab carport, and was built-in to create an extension, the remainder of the house (northeastern USA) has a full basement. Initially, they thought there was electrical wiring in the step, and whoever built the extension was simply too lazy to move the wiring when doing the extension.
Ripping it up, they saw the issue: the concrete had broken away and left a hole, so rather than actually repairing the concrete, they built a false floor, complete with step. Outrageous! 800 pounds (363kg) of concrete later, they have a smooth, level floor that they will no longer trip on.
The step is clearly visible at the bottom of the first photo.
