Hi,

I have been plastering over a room which has 2 plastered wall and 2 brick walls. Covering the brick walls with gyprock was easy, even for my very first plastering job. Things went pretty pear-shaped when I got to the cornice; all 4 walls had a 'standard' 55mm cornice and I bought enough extra to replace the stuff I pulled off above the brick walls. When I cut the first replacement cornice it was really obvious that edges were thinner than the original cornice.

The over-all dimensions are the same, however butting the old & new cornice shows a very noticeable step at the edges. Adding a shim behind the new cornice bulks it up to match the existing stuff, but that would be a very tedious job and would probably have its own problems. Are there any tricks of the trade to fix this problem?

Put extra adhesive bead along the cornice and hold in position with clouts until set. That is how we would do it.
