i didn't know how else to describe my need, so please forgive me. there is a house that i shoot past on the train each day that has the most fantastic gates. they appear to be made from some sort of sheet metal with a design cut out. these particular ones, a pathway gate and remote controlled driveway gate, remind me of the silhouette of tree trunks in a lake. i have not seen anything like them before and wondered if anyone may know of something like this up here in brisbane/gold coast/sunshine coast areas?

Not able to give you any ideas with suppliers in your area but it sounds like a job for a laser cutting company.
This would be a good DIY project, get some artwork/image, create a cad file for the laser cutters and you have your fancy gate panels ready to attach to a frame.
Use plain steel if you are going to paint it, Corten (Weathering steel) if you want the rusty look or stainless steel for a shinny finish.

My mate is a welder and uses the offcuts that come in sheets from laser cutters to make fantastic garden furniture, gates, planter boxes, etc. They will sell you these.

i could only imagine the time and effort it would talk to do the picture on a computer and the get it lasered... better off buying youself a sheet and free hand drawing it, taking it to a fab shop and get someone to plasma cut it. 2 hours @ 65 an hour. I have a friend who does it with old corrugated iron. takes her 20 min to cut out a shadow of a chook, cow or pig. Sells them for 20 bucks at the markets.

The patterns that are left over as offcuts can look pretty cool tho and they will sell them to you. Have a look at the stuff on my friend's website

If you love the design youve seen on the train hit up google maps and see if there is a street veiw of the gates - at least then you have an image to work from!

Ajm I can't help with anything in your area but I've got a similar plan in mind...was going to implement it in this house, but decided to sell and move on, so it's on the backburner for the next house. The design I have in mind was a rugged tree, sort of like a tree of life, and I even found a beautiful, big old, dead tree in a paddock and planned to drive up to the house and ask if they would mind if I took some photos of their tree, as I didn't want them calling the cops if I stopped on the road with a long lens!!!

Unfortunately before I got a chance to drop in, there was a wild storm through the area and some of the limbs came down so it's not nearly as nice as it was previously. Anyway, my plan was to get some sheet steel and hire (or beg, borrow or steal) an oxy set and cut the design freehand...mainly because I didn't want it to be 'perfect' as would happen with a laser cut design. I prefer the rusty appearance so no further finish would be required and behind the cutout area I would attach a sheet of copper, again unfinished to let the natural patina show through. An old HWS with copper liner is a good source of a nice big sheet of copper.

Good luck with your gates, would love to see some photos when you get them done.
