Hi Guys,

Nearing completion of my first deck project, 30sq mtr blackbutt decking secret fixed using deck-max. I made a rookie mistake of not checking the boards supplied by boral where all cut square. There are some boards which must have been cut with a 0.5-1 deg out on their saw which means there are some gaps on the butt joins. Call me a perfectionist, but I would like to cover up some of these gaps, about 2mm on some of the worst joins. I know you can use external putty, are there any reasons anyone can see why I shouldn't use some putty to fill the gaps before coating the deck?

Thanks.

:whs: You'll be the only one who'll notice and even you will forget it at the first barbs with friends on the new deck . . .

Got a picture ?

First rule of decking - always square the ends of the boards
2nd rule of decking - always backcut the joins

I wouldnt do it but as a possibility you could mask either side if the joint (flush with the edge) and fill with sikaflex. However 1. not sure it comes in any colour near your deck colour and 2. if you use black it will still look like a gap so why bother?

If you have a drop mitre-saw and some decking offcuts you could experiment with cutting very fine wedges and see how they look. Ever so important to wear face protection at all times and especially when cutting so fine.
