Unless you are very familiar in dealing with the Grays business model then I would not get too heavily entranced with the idea of using them....
Have you had a yarn to Central Coast Sawmilling? They specialise in hardwood milling and might be able to source something that's worth using Central Coast Saw Milling - Gosford - Central Coast - New South Wales (http://ccsm.com.au/)
There's a few other local suppliers that come to mind - Walker Brothers from memory

Check out the coffs harbour Advocate classifieds online, there has been a local miller with an ad running the last couple of weeks for HWD decking, 90 x 19 dressed for $2.95 lm (from memory).

pretty sure that any timber bundles coming through the auctions like greys will contain a lot of short lengths. They used to have timber auctions up here on the sunny coast and the piles all had great long lengths.....untill you looked under the top layer and found all the short ones hiding there!

You can try :Renovator Auctions | Hardwood Flooring | Building Materials Auctions | Tiles Auctions Sydney Australia (http://www.renovatorauctions.com.au/) , like any auction place they are trying to get rid of shorter lengths, just more screws for you. I bought some from these people, take into account the delivery fees as they can push the deal out of the window, ie ~$200 compared to nothing from a wood merchant. Also look on ebay there are a few dealers on there.

You can even try looking for local auction houses in your area. They are around if you look. It's not a huge help to you those in Sydney but we have a couple here in Melbourne. BG Auctions and the like.
I'm not sure if Laws Auctions is still running but that might be the type of place you are looking for.

I am looking to build a deck and under the new fire controls the decking needs to be hardwoodBeware: not all hardwood species are rated as suitable for this purpose. Some information can be found here:
www.timber.net.au - The Australian Database of Timber - Timber in Bushfire Prone Areas (http://www.timber.net.au/index.php/timber-in-bushfire-prone-areas.html)
But among the species mentioned, not all have the same durability. For an exterior deck you
need durability class 1 or 2. So check out some information about that as well:
www.timber.net.au - The Australian Database of Timber - Natural Durability Ratings (http://www.timber.net.au/index.php/outdoor-timber-naturally-durable.html)
and the more detailed pdf file downloadable from that page.
Imho, you should choose your desired species carefully first rather than just
buying whatever "hardwood" is available at auction. Also, try to find a timber supplier
who'll let you pick the lengths you want -- else you'll just get a pack of the stuff
in various lengths, some of which will be short and/or crappy.

Laws auctions is gone but the guys from there now run renovator auctions.
something to think about the reason the stuff is at auction is cause it cannot be sold for full value ie down grade or shorts or just crap

As a novice and living on the central coast I would be looking a a local supplier and new - you need to be able to see what you are buying and be able to go back to deal with the supplier should there be any problems. The price difference will not be worth the downside risks.
