Hello,
We would like some advice on how to attach our 90mm handrail to existing 112mm posts.
We have built our deck and are now at the stage of attaching our handrails.
Hubby wants to cut out a recess about 2cm deep and slip in handrail then putty and no more gaps up the area to close up the hole.
I have attached some photos to show the deck.
Any help would be appreciated.

What's the distance between posts, are their any short posts?

Thanks cherub65, there is a distance of approx 1365 between each post, with three posts holding up the roof and two posts just holding the handrail.

Personally would go some 190 x 45 laid on the flat (as that profile looks pretty ordinary over the top of 112mm posts). Will look good with the SS wire also.
Rebate into posts and cut around on one side (front or back), lay on top of shorter posts.

We were going to put the handrail pictured between each post and get a federation post cap to put on the top of each short post if that makes sense.
in addition, we were also under the impression that to comply with australian standards, a handrail could not be more than 90mm wide.

No Problems with width as far as I'm aware (just double checked BCA), Over that length you could just pre drill and screw the rails to post then fill holes.

Your idea will look fine ie: between the rails and post caps, although whether you need to go to the trouble of checking out rather than simply butting the rails - and using an suitable angle bracket to support underneath.

Also the traditional method is to use HWD 25mm or larger square section dowelled into the post, & checked into the underside of the handrail with fasteners in appropriate locations, best to never even contemplate only skew nails for a handrail.
