Hello

I have just retired and we are about to take over our newly built home where in will be building a new deck. There are only 2 bricks below the level of the patio door, so not much depth unless I dig which we can't really aford if it is avoidable.
Would prefer to use steel stirrups - unless you advise otherwise.

I will try to attach a "Sketch-Up" file but not sure if that will work.

Sizes are pretty accurate as is scale, but not 100% spot on.
The "Inset" is something my wife saw at a 'Display Home' but I have little idea on how I will manage the joists etc under it....

I can assure you that any advice is appreciated, Especially in relation to the support bearers and joists. i.e. what are your thoughts on inserting the joists between the bearers to minimise height of the support structure???

Regards

Bill

Could you convert the attachment to a PDF? I can't open it. I presume you need sketchup application to do so.

That is very feasible. Just remember your span must be calculated as single span and not continuous. My brother in law had the same dilemma. He did the joists and bearers out of gal c section and used a hidden decking system for the decking. But you could do it in timber.

Easy as - start by getting Allan Staines book. Very common to have joist abutting bearers - so the max depth needed is ~110mm.

Dean - thanks HEAPS. I had no idea how to do that so I was going to head off to a printers or something like that.

Manofaus - Sorry - I know that I am a bit thick... what exactly does this mean??? Just remember your span must be calculated as single span and not continuous.

I have bookmarked loads of suggestions, but I like the idea of listening to folks who have 'done it themselves'. There are two articles on the homepage that I will read tonight. I thought about 'no nails' but I might stick to screws and then hide them. ???

THIS IS THE BIT THAT MAKES ME NERVOUS -- THE INSET -- ESPECIALLY REGARDING PUTTING IN JOISTS CORRECTLY.
I forgot to mention that the INSET PART (Triangle) will have the internal timbers running north/south whereas the main boards will be east/west.
