We reckon it is kauri pine (my Kiwi husband is delighted) but would like to confirm and also ask advice about finishes. I guess something hardwearing, I don't like really shiny floors though. At this stage we'd like it to be a walnut colour (a bit like the edges in the pic), is it a stain we want?

Not going to attempt the refinish ourselves, but would like to know what to ask for.

PS this is so much nicer than the white 70's shag we spent all week pulling up!! We're pretty happy

POP.......Sadly, that was the sound of hubby's bubble bursting.

The timber is Cypress Pine - like the last thread we had on this very same subject. Great timber - done right - that is.

If its durability you want, then there are a few you can choose from.

Synteko Natural oil is a fine example, it is good for heavy traffic, however it will need refirisbing every 3-years. No good around water as much.
solvent based polyurethanes are about the toughest. They will last for 15-20 years before needing to recoat (depending on the treatment it gets, standard domestic no shoe well vacumed kept clean type of use). The only problem is that it tends to darken down the floor, and can look a bit plastic sometimes. But a good choise.
Water based polys are also very good, and my personal choise. They are hard wearing, and will keep the floor looking fresh for years. They normall will get about 7-12 years before needing a recoat.
Oil based or oil modified are also a good choise. But the are a fraction weaker than water based polys and will darken down the floor simular to solvent based products.

All in all, most comercial timber floor finishes will do the trick. I would get a pro in to do it all and discuss with him just what you expect in the look of the floor.

:whs: ditto with finishes - don't get locked into the various individual preferences and prejudices - many ways to do this and all have pros & cons
