Ok so I'm a bit of a novice when it comes to woodwork, however now that I've finished the bathroom (Which came up a treat) I'm moving onto the deck.
Deck is approx 5.2m x 6.2m, using TP Joists/Bearers on stirrups.
Height (260mm / 1 limestone block)
Using a Pelawan deck board.

I've attached an image of the area and the wood.

Is it the norm to receive deck that has heaps of gouges in it? I would say at least 20 boards are marked like the ones pictured. That is going to take some serious sanding to get rid of. I think I'll just take them back.
Also I'm hoping some of the black marks will come off with a napisan wash....will wait and see.

Should i oil the boards before i lay them? I have the time.

When I bought Pelawan (many years ago now) I was told that the reeded side was the perfectly milled side, and so there may be some imperfections on the flat side. There weren't, which I was pleased with, as I wouldn't have put up with what you have shown. Given the flat side side faces up I would get replacements for those boards. Re the oiling beforehand, there are some that will say yes and some don't bother. My experience with Pelawan (90x22) is that it hasn't cupped so I wouldn't bother personally. What are you planning to oil with?

The blokes are happy to take the damaged boards back. I have this sneaky feeling they new some were buggered.

As for the oil...haven't decided yet. Probably something clear or very light tint. The pelewan already has a nice colour.

Hey lads,
Any ideas for the best method in connecting the ledger board to the limestone blocks? Im guessing the limestone is going to be a bit flakey.
Chemset? (with threaded rod?)
Dynabolts?
Cheers
