Oils on rafters

I'm considering using decking oil on rafters. Any one done this before? This is exposed rafters and I want to get the most rustic look. I'm worried that the heat from the sheet will make the oil deteriorate quickly and blister... My other option is to paint it with an exterior paint like solarguard.

What do you reckon?

Oil won't blister. Also won't degrade any quicker than an exposed deck
