View Full Version : Ripping up carpet to an almost nice suprise

We are getting our house ready to sell and decided to get rid of the terrible carpet. There is beautiful polished floor boards underneath that only seem to have a little bit of wear. As we are planning on selling we don't want to get all the floor re done. There are some patches that really stick out, looks like the people laying the carpets went nuts with a knife here and there.
Is there any way of patching up a few little bits?
What do people usually use for edging when there is a ~20mm step down from the tiles/carpet?

Thanks,

1. Get a pro floor sander in to do a spot sand, polish and refinish.
2. Aluminum or timber mouldings will sort the step downs - carpet shoppe or specialist timber outlet like AJ Lewis (Melbourne).

Imagine throwing carpet over that great timber floor - barbarians! :( You could try the repair of scratches by hand using a random orbital sander, but they are deep so a pro would be needed - but worth a go as it might be 'good enough' and cost less.

Thanks for the quick responses. That timber moulding looks like it would suit the house.
What should I paint it with?

Wish I could train my kids to pull the staples out, they are doing my head in!

The cuts in the flooring from the carpet layers can be a couple of millimeters deep and bruising of the timber can be an extra millimeter or so. When the cuts are sanded out the bruising can show up as a dark mark that is upto 7x the width of the original "cut" when the flooring is coated.
Choose a pro to sand your floor and don't go for the cheapest price, make him aware of the problem when he quotes you for the job.
Good luck and best wishes.
Levey.
