Hi All.
Whilst visiting my local el cheapo timber/tools supplier. I caught sight of some galvanised verandah/carport/deck??? supports. These had the usual space for a 100 x 100(ish) to be bolted between two support sides. The other end however, was a gi-normous self tapping thread. They come with a long piece of gal steel obviously to use to "auger" the whole thing into the ground. Thread length looked to be a bit over 400mm (did not have measure with me! ) As I am about to pay a guy with a massive "drill bit" on his tractor to make holes for our replacement/enlarged carport (2 car spaces to 3.5) AND as we have no idea what to expect below ground but expect rocks/rubble/general fill making the level....

I wondered if anyone has used these?
Any problems/limitations?
With only the "thread" anchoring the stirrup do I have increased risks with wind lift?
I guess, I liked the idea but am concerned that it might perform like a giant tent peg...and eventually, tent pegs always work loose.

Any feed back gratefully accepted:U
Thanks for your time

i wouldnt use them for a carport (wouldn't use them at all), i think there for low level decks.

I think I recal someone on here used one or two for a low level deck around a pool.

he used them as it was going inbetween tree roots and only for a few of the supports.

I think you are talking about Groundscrews produced by Krinner. If you go to their website it appears they are pretty useful. Most people I've spoken to are pretty dubious about them though.

There is a thread on here about them from a while back when I asked for peoples thoughts on them.

Thanks All.
My earlier searches did not turn up the Forum's coverage of this item, but then I did not have the term "Ground Screws". The products at my local supplier were just in an unmarked bin.
It is indeed the Krinner product, & all my queries were answered on their website, so thanks to Hoff for that specific lead lead.:)
Here's the link for anyone else looking at these to use....

Have seen them used to secure things like children's cubby house.
Dont know if I would trust them for a deck or pergola.

Some pretty substantial structures shown in the completed jobs section of the website, most notably the school building which is massive.

Personally I reckon it makes sense that these things would be very strong and stable and I'd have no problems using them on a deck etc. Again, on the website is a pretty substantial completed deck.

If structural engineers are happy that they comply with standards for such structures, I think the old carport will be ok.

I've used them, once they are fully screwed in (that takes a bit of force) they are not going anywhere and have less lateral flex than the convention stirrup. They have been used for years on commercial footings.

Its amazing how many people have opinions and offer advice on things they know nothing about on this forum.

I think its horses for courses, it depends on soil etc. Where I am house foundations were at about 600mm and that proved to not be good enough. Now its about 1200. But its clay. So unless you screwed these that depth they are liable to move. Across the road and up a bit its the remains of the great devide and its rocky, Im sure they would be fine there.

I,d be screwed using them in my area, cant dig a hole without hitting rock, let alone screwing in an oversized coachbolt :D
