I'm currently renovating and in on room I've replaced all the gyprock etc. It's now time to put the skirting boards back in but this is where I have a questions. I plan to put in some lino so will be laying in a masonite sheet which the lino will go ontop of.

Should I be laying the masonite first and then on top of this the skirting board or should I put the skirting board and then cut the masonite etc to fit? The old way was skirting board first followed by masonite around it and I think I'll do this but want to check first.

It'd be nice to put masonite down and lino then ontop of that skirting board but upon next update I'm thinking it's be a nightmare to remove and I'd have to remove the skirting boards once again and would be left with potential gaps if the new material is thinner. Any thoughts on how it's done these days?..

Flooring (masonite/lino) first, then skirting. Why worry about what it may look like if/when you replace the lino in 10, 15 or 20 years time?

Tend to agree with Vernov, but I go a bit further I drill and countersink the skirting and screw it on. Bit of filler and smooth off and no one knows. If I need them off, a run over with a nail finder to find where the screws are pick out the filler and its easy.

True. I guess replacing skirting boards isn't exactly hard work anyway. This method was infact my first way of doing it until I talked myself potentially into doing it the way it had been done originally .

I'd put the skirting in first, but I always was a contrary b*@3ard.

I think putting in the skirting last on top of is probably contrary in most homes. Most people would suggeset your way since that's just how it's done usually though perhaps for streamlining of workmen rather than anything else.

I'm thinking that as they build a house the carpet and flooring is one of the last things to go in so you aren't going to call the chippy in to put in all the doors frames etc but leave the skirting off. Then get the carpet/flooring guy in and then call back the chippy. More expedient to call in the chippy once and get doors, frames and skirting done in one hit.. Then of course you have the pain of dealing with it when you pull the floor up and replace it with new covering. You basically need to rip off the skirting again.

I'm still in two minds about how to do it. I'm thinking since I'm doing it all it's easier laying the masonite and lino first then nicely cap it off with the skirting rather than fight cutting masonite around the skirting as well as the lino.. Countersinking and screwing will at least help with it later on.

If the skirting goes on top of the lino you will get a nice clean looking edge where the lino meets the skirting without any worries about it lifting up at the sides....

If it does need to be replaced in the future I take it a Stanley knife could cut the lino along the skirting board edge but leave the masonite in place as that would be unlikely to need redoing...
