Hi all,

I'm about to start repairing/rebuilding my verandah. The main problem is that all the 125x125mm posts have rot at the bottom where they sit on the deck. I'm guessing the main reason is they had trim around them which allowed water to run down and sit under and around the post. The trim was amazing, basically just a paint shell! The verandah (particularly the right side in the pic) is exposed to the weather and I want to prevent this happening again (even though its taken around 60 years to happen). Obviously leaving off the trim will help but I still dont like the idea of the post just sitting on the deck.

Does anyone have any suggestions? I'm going to knock out all the concrete and build new brick piers to support it all and I was thinking of running the posts down to the new pier and then leaving a gap around the post for water to drain when I lay the new decking (if that makes sense). Also the verandah slopes towards the house at the moment which probably doesn't help things, whick I'll fix when I do the new piers.

What about putting these into your piers and have them finish an inch above deck level.

Thanks Bedford, they look to be just about perfect.

I had a look at my local Pryda stockist and they didn't have anything like that (which was why I was a bit stuck for ideas). Are they readily available or special order?

Our local hardware has some sizes in stock, but can usually get what they don't have in a couple of days. Your shop should be able to get them in for you as well.

Those types of post anchors are fine provided your area has a wind classification of N2 or less
