Hi,
Getting a house built next year by spec builder and I will do several areas, including the electricals and plumbing (hep2). By this I mean, I do first rough in, then get the registered guys to finish off and of course do the connections and build the power board. Owner built two previous houses, so pretty good idea.

Question:
With all the issues of people being electocuted in roofs with insulation installation, I wondered if I have to place covers over wiring in the ceiling cavity or run it though conduit, which would be very time consuming etc..or simply follow roof trusses bottom chords? and not criss cross wiring by the nearest path.

I will be fitting the Saturn GPO though out so, need to tell sparky to make sure leds work ok on switches?

I am providing all materials(have access to electrical wholesaler) I will be having typical lowset house power board with 24 pole?
Main switch
4x A/C (split systems)
2x light
6x power
1 x oven/cooktop
1x hotwater
1?x earth leakages
meter box

So I can budget, what would be my typical shopping list for sparky to populate the power board?

Will be using 1.5 and 2.5 twin+earth and what ever sparky wants for oven/cooktop

Hi,

You might have some problems as spec builders have their own subbies but someone under contract you can chop and change with the contract

Better discuss that with the electrician as only licensed people can run fixed wiring.

Why don't you install the insulation under the roofing and then the whole of the ceiling area is clear. I have done it that way about 15 yrs ago. It has the advantage of good visibility to the roof area for white ant inspection.

Why don't you go down to your electrical wholesaler with the list and put it into a spreadsheet and you will get the result. Allow for 4 rolls of each size cable.

Hi Bros,
Builder is a friend, so happy I do things 'within' our contract as long as person signing off for each area is BSA guy..I am doing several areas, including electricals with lic sparky I have done builds before so have a pretty good idea. He or his guys will be 'supervising' and I never fix or connect any thing.
Insulation...Well, I found a company with insulation to their roof, so they were so happy to give me free what I require...just bring a truck and we load you up... have enough for two houses ...So, ceiling insulation it is.
My wholesaler says you ask and I will supply, but we don't give advice.....Sparky will tell me., Usually is a game of saying show me your price and I will see what I can do.

Can't be sure on this but I heard that the latest standards won't let you get away with only using anticon, will check and get back on this.

With all the issues of people being electocuted in roofs with insulation installation,
Turn the power off when putting in insulation and stay away from foil batts, especially those that need to be stapled down. Wiring must be on top of insulation, no need to do anything special with it.

When I got the energy assessment, I have to put in R3.5 on ceiling and sarking or anticon under tin roof. Because of the take what you need deal for insulation, I have double thickness for ceiling cover, sufficient foil rolls to cover it, R1.5 for walls, breather wall wrap and roof sarking...

Interesting you say wiring on top of insulation? How? when ceiling cavity wired, I would imagine wiring will at worst be running over bottom chord of roof truss, and if I do this real neat, along some sort of common rail, which when all completed, I could put a cap on to stop me walking on the cable when I fit insulation.
I will use caps for down lights, and make sure I have them secured in place.
Good idea though to turn off power before walking about up there putting in insulation and roof spinners.
