View Full Version : So the shed is up

I just had a shed (7x8 in size) put up. Now it was with concrete piers rather than a slab that the shed is built on. Now I want to pave the inside - It won't be for a car, a small workshop space, some furniture and bookshelves etc.
The ground is clay and compacted already, but slightly uneven, I was going to use some roadbase to level it out (I am assuming that I do not need a slope as this is inside). Upto 100mm in places but in others it may be 60mms thick, Is this OK to do as the ground below is compacted?
Now with the screed rails I was going to do sections of about 1.5 metres wide to level the sand (rather than try and do the total floor space with the sand first up). This is so I can stack up pavers near where I will require them. Is this OK to do?
Now last question, do I need to do anything to stop moisture coming thru the pavers?
And one last point I will be having concrete edging around the pavers

I would just do it as you are planning. so long as the sub base is well compacted, it wont make too much difference. As an alternative, excavate until you have 100mm all round.
Now with the screed rails I was going to do sections of about 1.5 metres wide to level the sand (rather than try and do the total floor space with the sand first up). This is so I can stack up pavers near where I will require them. Is this OK to do? Yep - spot on. My screed rails are 1.5m long, I space them about 1.5 wide, screed then pave the section. much easier. For you, once you screed, and because you wont be able to come in from behind, place some pavers down as stepping stones to get to where you want to start paving. I would also consider compacting the sand as well, then putting a screeded layer on top. just get thinner screed rails, a couple of 10mm box steel lengths would do the trick. Even consider cracker dust instead of sand. Compact, level off, and place pavers on top.
Now last question, do I need to do anything to stop moisture coming thru the pavers? Put a layer of builders plastic between the ground and your road base, or your road base and the sand.
And one last point I will be having concrete edging around the pavers. Have you costed the difference between concreting the floor and paving? If the shed is permanent, and it sounds like it, I would concrete.
cheers

Just thought of another question. I want the road base to go to the height of the base of the shed wall, as there is a gap between the ground and where the corrugated walls begin. On top of that the sand and then the pavers. This will make it is so the floor is higher than the base of the wall by maybe 60mm. This is to help with making no water runs in.
Where the posts are bolted to the piers it will now be lower than the floor line. Does this matter? I was planning to run concrete around the pavers along the edge of the pavers and between the wall.
