Hi,
I am considering enclosing a small patio area to make it into a computer/sewing nook. When we moved in we removed the railings and brought the furniture up through sliding door, as per the photo. Without modifying the front door (at ground level), which is offset from internal stairs, this is the way we would remove our furniture as well. We do have another sliding door (behind where the photo was taken) but the patio is about half of the width at that point - but it is a viable option.

Before I get too much further into considering building it in, I would like to get some feedback on options. It seems obvious that a sliding door where the railing is, is not an option. Another option, and perhaps the only option, is a large window. I don't want to build outside of this area as there is a two-car garage below it and can't add any structures at ground level.

Is there any thing else to consider or any suggestions?

I think a large sliding door or window would be OK as long as you maintained the railing somehow. It's called a Juliet balcony. You could then remove the railing when required for special controlled circumstances like moving house.

Thanks for the information. I will keep the juliet balcony in mind when the time comes. Although when I picture it in my mind I don't think it would suit our style of house.
