View Full Version : Sprucing up old timber fence

We recently purchased an older home, and have got a timber fence on the front. I believe it’s hardwood, about 15 years old.

The fence itself seems rock solid and it seems a waste to replace it, if it’s doing the job

But it’s tired and grey, very dry and we need ideas on how to spruce it up cheaply and easily.

Someone suggested using engine oil, how easy is this to do? And is it legal?

We’re happy to paint it, if someone can tell us where and how to start! We’ve been told that old timber fences absorb a lot of paint, so this isn’t the best option, but I’m happy to hear from you guys if you disagree

Many thanks!

We’re newbies at renos, so detailed instructions would be very welcome!

buy some fencing paint, usually comes in 15l buckets - will cover the hardwood fine

agree to that. Timber fence paint or stain comes in a range of colours and is best applied by spraying, beats the hell out of using a brush. It's not all that expensive, especially when you consider it will look 100 times better
