Thread: What if Charles dies before the Queen?

The Field Marshall thinks I am being picky, but it annoys me when they describe Wills as 2nd in line to the throne...that's true if Chuckles makes it to the top job, but if he dies before the Queen (he is getting on a bit and the Old Girl is steaming on), the next in line is then Andrew, not Wills.

In that case he would then be succeeded by Queen Beatrice, and Wills and Kate would miss out altogether......in that situation I reckon the Republic debate would get revived pronto.....

And here's me wondering what I'll have for dinner....

It was my understanding that succession in the UK works differently to what you have described....if Charlie carks it between Madge then Charlie Junior is the dude rather than Andy......

Or maybe that's just on Coronation Street. Or is it East Enders.

Ultimately.....does it really matter?

Nah, if Charles died childless then Andy gets the top job, but since he has an heir and a spare, then Andy is now 4th in line. Not that we care, cos once betty falls off her perch we will undoubtedly become a republic as I suspect that the only reason for resistance in the Australian community is loyalty to the person, rather than the crown. Though, of course, we would probably like someone to come up with a model for a republic that does not involve jobs for the good ol boys ...

I thought the heir line was Watson then Bedford.

Interesting!!! I never knew the rules of succession! I thought Wills would (naturally) be after Charles?!

I tend to agree with blackcat, I think once charles has an heir who is old enough to take the throne he would be next in line for succession. These days puplic popularity has a lot to do with it too, and wills has been groomed for it since he was born.

look at the recent history, Elizabeth was groomed as the oldest child to be a queen, princess Margaret on the other hand was never expected to take the throne so she led a party life with her fair share of scandals.

Charles was groomed for the job, married his future queen and put out an image of mr respectability (of course his infidelity was never meant to be public). Andy on the other hand was out there with his womanising and charles would never have been allowed to run around with someone like koo stark.

Now take a look at wills and harry, Wills behaves like a future king and is now engaged, while harry just wants to party, it's not an accident that the siblings take a much different path, they are really never expected to take the throne so the first in line is raised with much higher expectations and held to a different standard. You can't just pick a royal and say "they'll do" if they haven't been raised for the job - it would end up being the end of the monarchy since these days they do not have the same political power they once had and are just there but for the grace of the British people.

Things were probably a bit different hundreds of years ago when people died of TB and other illnesses, but royal children these days don't drop off like that anymore

Yes, it's Charles next, then Willliam. The succession is governed by a few different Acts there, and they give primacy generally to a (legitimate) first-born male, and then to their (legitimate) first-born male. Prince Harry is next in the queue now after Wills. It's all very stuffy
