Default Spotlights in bathroom

Hi all,

Was thinking about installing some spotlights in my bathroom and was wondering the what the regulations are on positioning them. Can they be placed directly over the shower recess? And is there a special water resistant spotlight housing that must be used?

It is to be connected by the sparky but was going to cut holes etc my self to save some $$

thanks

Pete

To a first approximation, cutting the holes yourself will save you absolutely nothing...and could actually cost you more if you have one in the wrong spot (on a batten/under a truss or something like that).

A light over the shower will get horrible and gunky in very short order, and even if it is IP56 rated, there will still be cleaning issues that you just don't want!!!

thanks for the reply!

I have previously pre-cut the holes for other downlights throughout the house so no dramas with hitting timber in the roof saving heaps of time and just using the sparky to connect up.

I guess one off to the side of the shower will be the best solution.

Forgot to ask also, how close to the shower recess can i put an exhaust fan? can that go above the shower?

cheers

Hi mate, you can put an exhaust fan directly above the shower as long as all electrical components are above the line of the ceiling. Same goes for a downlight above the shower. A downlight above a shower looks very good also.

Being someone who hates cleaning, I would avoid one directly over the shower. But you could have one in front of the shower and simply get one that had a gimbal action so you could tilt it to highlight the shower bay if that is your concern.
