Default Treated pine sleepers for bearers ?

G'day all , quick question i'm sure it's been discussed before but I don't have the time to hunt through threads at this moment .
Question is can I use garden grade treated pine sleppers for bearers on a deck as I have a fair few from a wall I ripped out of the garden , if so great if , not so be it ..
They are very sound and I can't see why they wouldn't be strong enough for the job ..
Thanks in advance for any answers .. Fred..

    Hi Frogger,

I think you will find the answer is "it depends". New sleepers would be acceptable and have been treated, however they would have different acceptable spans, ratings etc. than bearer/joist specific timbers, therefore it would be difficult to calculate spans etc.

However your situation is different again as you are talking about 2nd hand timber, which is unknown in terms of its current strength/performance from being used in a retaining wall. Time it has been there, what has been on it (wet soil)/waterproof membrane etc.

I'd probably grab some new timber so I know what I am working with, however there are others on here far more experienced than me so wait for some more replies also.

    Have fun!
