Thread: Flexible gap filler?

Hi All,

I was reading in another thread that for gaps between tongue&groove boards a flexible filler should be used... I figured "no more gaps" type stuff? The no more gaps coloured caulk has a warning on it not to use on tongue and groove boards, it says to use no more gaps weatherboard... problem is weatherboard only comes in white... I have a 6mm or so gap between in my floor i want to fill - this is the only filling i will be doing inbetween boards... anyone care to suggest products to use?

I suggest you cut and glue in a fillet of Cypress Pine for a gap that size.

The flexible fillers are useless as a floor gap fixer.

On one hand we have the hard fillers like Timbermate, which are great, but their downfall is the tendency to crack when the boards move due to climatic change.

The flexible fillers, on the other hand, are different, as when the boards move towards each other the filler bulges which in turn can damage the coatings and believe me looks much, much worse than the hard fillers.

I had given that some thought Dusty, my hesitation came in not really having a suitible tool to cut the timber that thin I have a compound mitre saw and a circular saw, but the circ isn't mounted under a workbench so i'd have to do it hand held and for 6 or so mm - I'm not that tallented...

I was just reading another thread where people mention sikaflex? I would rather fill it with glue and timber tho - what type of glue would you recommend? Even if I cut shorter strips of timber its probably going to be a better result... i have about 1.2m of gap to do...

Selleys Aquadhere will do the trick as an ideal glue.

Using smaller, more manageable strips is a great idea if you tools a limited.

Once you have glued the fillet of timber in I still recommend that you fill the gap with Timbermate putty, as the strip of timber will not fill the gap completely. This will complete the look, and the small amount of putty will not cause any problems later on down the track, as it only really has a tendency to crack when it's used in big, wide amounts.

For the timber filet, you could use a glazing bead,
tap in the tapered side abd plane/sand it flush once the glue dries
