Thread: paint or floor

what happens first... do u paint the walls and ceiling then lay ur timber floor, or lay u floor first... i didnt want to lay the floor, sand it then polish it after painting so i dont create a mess

lay the floor and cover with brace ply and/or drop sheets. Paint eveything else then do the floor last I reckon

If you've the time all painting should be done... All wet trades to be finished before flooring also because of the humidty given the drying of paint etc.

wouldnt i get dust all over my new painted walls and ceilings if i lay floor last because it has to be sanded

Paint last. Why? Because it is not necessary. You can live in the house without it being painted for years. (I speak from experience) Get the floors done, get the tradies out, and paint (or not) in your own leisure time

Paint before your floors or it will never get done. (Again I speak from experience)

In my experience with new home builds and rennos the floor is always done last, just in case. Damage can and does happen. If the floor is damaged / scratched etc.. it can generally be sanded out before finishing. The dust on the walls is no big deal at all. The only thing I wouldnt paint is the skirts. They would probably need a touch up after the edge sander has been through - so I would only prime them.

Each to there own IME doing the painting after the floors is fraught with problems and make overs ...

Go with the suggestion Ringtail offered and you'll be right.

Sand and polish the floors first , any spills drips can be easily cleaned off if the boards are polished,

And what about scratches from dragging ladders and grit trapped under the drop sheets etc... across a newly finished floor. They dont just wipe off.

im going with ringtail am i correct in assumeing these floorsanders have dust collection bags attatched to them and they would collect the majority if not all of the sanding dust

Yeah mate, gone are the days of sanding floors with a belt sander. The modern stuff is pretty bloody good at dust collection. Not to say that there is no dust, but its not the stuff bad dreams are made of.

I am painting before floor sanding... I even had dusty come on site to sand my floors before he turned away to let me paint first! He even got out of bed before 6am to be there on site early.... Moral of the story is paint first... floor finishings just before you move in..
