Hi all,
First time posting and new member! My husband and I have an old house that came with a deck, we've had the place for about three years now and have not used it much. We recently realized that the wood was very likely not treated in anyway and some of the boards, steps in stairs and part of the railing had to be replaced because they were rotten. Our problem is that whomever had this house before has fully painted the deck but probably did not treat it before hand. We want to know if there is anything we can do to salvage this deck short of stripping the paint that is already on the wood (would that even work? might it damage the untreated wood underneath?). Is there any type of sealing treatment we can do on top of the current paint? Or any sort of paint we could use on top of the current layer of paint that will stay and help protect the wood?
Another thing I should mention is that the majority of the deck has a roof protecting it so it is not exposed to the elements completely, perhaps that is why the former owner thought they could get away with not staining the deck?
Any help would be appreciated!
Thanks
Ellie
