Default How long before acrylic plasterboard glue skins over?

I'm replacing a ceiling. As it consists of 3 sheets, backblocking is required; because of ceiling access backblocking has to be done from below, at time of install of the sheets.

There's a elapsed time issue in all this; cornice cement sets in 45 minutes, so the sooner the sheet goes up to the backblocks covered in wet cornice cement, the better. Also, however the sheets will also be glued, the acrylic adhesive also has to be applied to the rafters and the sheets put up before the adhesive skins, as Rod has warned us.

So what's the best sequence? Do I apply adhesive, then mix cornice cement, apply that and fit the backblocks, and then jack the sheet into place? How long can adhesive be applied to rafters before it skins?

So many projects, so little time ...cheers!

Glue up for the first sheet and then fix into place. Then mix up some cement, put b/blocks in and then glue and screw 2nd sheet. 3rd sheet same as 2nd

Thanks CPE. The first sheet went up last w/e, long since dry. The benefit of amateurs with low holding costs!

Are you saying the adhesive skins quicker than 45 minutes, that is quicker than cornice cement? Otherwise that sequence doesn't make sense.

    Cheers

It depends on the weather. In summer glue can skin in 5 minutes.

You dont need to worry about glue 'skinning' its only bad if it skins before you install the the sheet of plaster. Just follow the order above and do it in reasonably quick time and youll be ok. Glue takes about 24 hours to cure.

    heres the order.

-cut the sheets and put them in the room
-have the back blocks cut and ready
    -glue and screw first sheet
-mix up c/cement or whatever you are using for b/block adhesive
-coat back blocks and place on join of first sheet
-glue and screw second sheet in place
    -repeat process until sheeting complete
