Thread: Insulation + Dust Removal

Hey all I'm new here. I've done some searching and haven't found the answers I'm looking for. I'm currently in the process of restoring a 1933 art deco/Californian bungalow style home. Theres no insulation in the roof and as a result the second floor gets really hot in summer. I'm not sure what the bests type of insulation is, also I need a company who can remove dust as well.


Any recommendations people?


Also i should mention I'm in inner south melbourne..

we had this done a few weeks ago. it was efficient and very worthwhile. i posted about it at the time. 133 m2, with earthwool insulation and dust removal was roughly $2700

For your type of roof the vacuum is optional but you probably have a truck load of dust, dead rodents and goodness knows what else up there that would be better off somewhere else.

The type of insulation you are chasing is probably going to be glass or polyester bats with a minimum R3.5 value. If you can afford a higher rating then go for it R8 would be getting carried away but anything from R4 to R5 would not be overdoing it. If you have light penetrations going into the roof space (downlights) these should have shrouds to protect from fire. You biggest form of heat gain/loss is ceiling penetrations including fans and vents and the more you can reduce draft the better. The same applies to walls and those attractive old wall vents, loose fitting windows and gappy doors along with leaky floors.

I don't know alot about insulation but i'd prefer to use the lowest irritant type possible as it's a useful storage space so i might be in the roof from time to time, i guess the thicker the better
