Thread: Structural Steel

G'day all,

Just wondering if anyone can recommend a good company in the Sydney area for structural steel. I'm after some RHS, PFC and UB for a house we're building. When I use the prices they quote in Cordells, I estimate it should cost around $16K. The only quote we've got back so far is for $40K. Hoping this isn't a sign of things to come with the other quotes we're waiting on.

And while we're at it, does anyone out there use Cordells or Rawlinsons? Have you found them to be accurate? Builders I've spoken to say that the prices are on the cheapish side, but I'm not sure if they are just trying to talk up the quote.

I do not buy much stuff in Sydney.

I just go to basic steel supply places but never buy large structural steel.

Email onesteel, they make most of this stuff and see what they have to say.

Steel has gone up considerably in the last year. :eek:

I'm going through the same thing and have found Jacobson Steel to be reasonably priced. But it is well worth while ringing around as I find the price of structural steel changes depending what is happening in the building industry.

Another point of contact would be BlueScope Lysaght, best to look them up on the web, as they have different division for different products.

It depends on:

1) Where about in Sydney?

2) What sizes - full bars or cut to size?

If it’s a few k$ worth then buying directly off Onesteel WETHERILL PARK or BlueScope Lysaght - Smithfield will be the cheapest. They do have minimum order requirements.

Thanks for the replies.

We're building in the south of Sydney, in the Sutherland Shire. The majority of the steel will have to be cut to size, except for the 75X75X4 RHS which comes in a standard size of 2.4m. We need about :

90m RHS
80m C20019
35m 230X75 PFC
50m 200 UB25

all cut to lengths between 4 and 6m

It also has to be hot dipped galvanised.

The prices in June 2005 Cordells were

RHS $128.90/2400mm
C20019 $15.15/m
230X75 PFC $136.02/m
200 UB25 $68.08/m

Hot Dip Galvanising $683/tonne

That works out to be roughly $4600 per tonne.

my god thas expensive, the joys of living in sydney. Theres a place here in melbourne that sells imported steel, rhs gal 100x100x3x8m $178.45, the closest rhs in 75x75 gal is 3mm and thats $131.45 for 8m, 200UB25.4x9m $414.95, 230x75PFCx9m$396.15, the closest purlins in the price list are c20015 galx7.62m$79. Does it have to be gal, couldnt you use red oxide primer. Its almost worth getting them shipped up if they are the cheapest in sydney you can find.

Unfortunately the engineer has specified that it has to be gal.

What's the name of that place in Melbourne? I just may get it shipped up to Sydney.

Would the importer be selling steel that is to the same AS requirements as the local manufacturers?

Also what's a C20019?

I was curious to know if much of the steel was for the piers, bearers and or joists.

I built a small structure where the engineer specified for the piers bearers etc large heavy steel eg PFC and UB etc.

I was then recommended a company [spantec], that did the engineering for the piers bearers and joists which was a fraction of the weight to initial specs. Thin RHS basically.

I have no idea why one is so much thinner and lighter but yet can hold the same weight?? :confused:

C20019 is a lightweight C-section beam. Check out the attachment.

All the RHS is for piers. The heavier stuff (UB and PFC) is for bearers and the C20019 is for joists on the outside balconies (bushfire zone).

Had a second engineer have a look over the drawings because I thought there was a bit too much steel, but he thought they were right on the money.

Try tradeconnect at www.tradeconnect.com.au or you could try Southern Steel in Milperra.

You'll find their prices to be pretty good.

Those prices are way better than any I've found. A long way from the original quote.
