    Default Highway Guidepost Numbers

On the highway here (Cairns area) every 4th or so guide post has a different number stenciled on it (big, easy to read as you drive past)
    Do they mean anything?
Can they be used for location on the highway?
We used to be fast rough and expensive, but we've slowed down a lot lately

They more than likely could be indicating the position (and maintenance number) of a culvert running under the road.
Every 4th guide post seems like a relatively small spacing (compared to SA) but in a higher rainfall area it's quite likely.
