    Default compressor fault?

Have a problem with a reverse cycle ducted outdoor unit.I start the unit up set on 23deg heating mode, wait for it to warm up etc,and no heat! Cooling is the same. Electrics have been checked and all seems well.
LED display is showing system fault.I figured compressor has had it? No gas or liquid can be heard running through pipes on heating or cooling mode.Unit is 5yrs old.Other possibility, there is no refrigerant left in the pipes?

However ,if there is the required refrigerant in the unit and power is going to where its supposed to, would this indicate compressor fault?

    Ideas would be appreciated.

    not necessarly,
Does the compressor ( outside ) run
are the fans on the outside unit operating
Are the fans on the evaporator ( the unit in your celing ) operating
Does the unit cut out after running for a while
Have you tried isolating the unit at the main switchboard for a minute or so then resupplying power ( some times this resets the board and corrects the fault)
Are the filters inside ( when were these last cleaned / changed) and the mesh on the outside unit clean
Have you checked all the fuses ( including the slow blow and the main fuses at the main switchboard ) with a multi meter
There should be a sight glass ( may have a plastic cap on it ) does fluid run through this when machine starts up
Perhaps its time for a fridge technition , check on exactly when you bought it and the warenty period ( usually 5 years on a compressor , and may be covered by your household insurance for up to 10 years if you have the right policy protection )

    Hi Ashore,

Thanks for reply.Electrics fuses have been checked by electrician. All ok.Have checked for refrigerant presence via vac points, both are present. When the unit is turned on there is a distinct click at the compressor. The outdoor then kicks in,the indoor does not fire up.Pipes do not heat up also. When on heat/cool mode indoor fan runs, outdoor does not. When on cool mode no units run at all.Coil fans are clean, filter r/a has not been changed but is clean..The unit is running only 5 outlets.Unit brand is the Bonaire B009R, 9.3kw Heat. 8.9kw Cooling.Manufactured 7/2005,Installed on?

    Your thoughts?

It could be something as simple as a loose wire.....
There needs to be an input at the compressor contactor , If this isnt present the compressor wont run but all else usually will.

Alot of a/c units will have a controller (on the wall) that will talk to the indoor printed circuit board and this will control the functions of the outdoor unit ( send run signal to compressor )

There are other factors as in the following ,

    1. Open windings on compressor

    2.Faulty pc boards

    3. faulty contactor.

Being the brand and year of the a/c i would think that its to overcomplicated and expensive as some of the later a/c unit that are so computer orientated.

    Good luck

What area are you located in?

Did the electrician check for power to the compressor , ie remove cover and check terminals at the compressor ,
as dsjohnson001 said could be contactor

What did you use to check , gauges What was the pressure at these points, or just release some gas ,
When the unit is turned on there is a distinct click at the compressor.
This indicates it could be the compressor but being a scroll type , more likely the motor
The outdoor then kicks in,the indoor does not fire up
This could be a fuse to the ceiling fan you need to get to this unit and check to see if its getting power
.Pipes do not heat up also. When on heat/cool mode
Don't understand " heat/cool mode" is it on heat or cool ?
indoor fan runs, outdoor does not.

Have you checked to see if it's still in warranty
Who was the leco who checked the fuses , a fridge tech or a friend ?
Without looking at the schematic and the unit theres not much else I could advise
