Default Ducted gas heating installed - dodgy?

    Hi all,

We had a ducted gas heating system installed today. The guy who installed it knocked a hole through the brick wall to get the ducts from the outside unit to under the house.

Now its installed there is a pretty significant gap in the bricks around the sides and bottom of the heating unit (about 2-3 cms each side and about 4-5 cms below.

I was wondering if this is something to be expected or if is reasonable to expect that the gaps would be filled or some sort of cover used to stop rain, mice, birds etc getting past the heating system and under the house?

    Thanks for your advice.

    Cheers
    Red

    Hi redd and welcome,
That seems to be the standard way of doing an install..... if your comparing it to the way mine was installed.
In fact the gaps around mine are huge and let the rats come and go at their leisure. Depending on how it has been done (a picture tells a thousand words) it might be possible to cover the gaps quite easily.

Now whether you feel it is the installer job to do this, or yours, is the next question.

Thanks mate. If that's the way its done I don't mind filling the gaps. Just wanted to see how others have been finished. Cheers!

This is an installers guide to the Braemar systems.

    http://www.braemar.com.au/PDFDocumen...temInstall.pdf

Pages 7 of this pdf shows the hole in the wall bit.

Having read your other posts on the forum, it sounds like you may have encountered some other issues with this install...

Thanks for the document link, that's really helpful.

Yeah, the install wasn't quite as smooth as I would have liked. Was pretty disappointed with the damage/demolition of the brick pillar...

    I really appreciate your help.

    Cheers

i work for a builder and we find that it really is hit and miss, the bigger companies have more employees and therefore less control over the quality which can often mean, stupid lazy mistakes or plain noncommon sense decisions. We carry space invader and aluminium flashing for when the installers leave.

Mate, Ive been installing gas ducted systems for a while now and rule number one is,
No gaps should be seen from around the heater unit.

A professional installer will make sure this does not happen,it is up to him/her to seal the surrounding unit with flashings normally supplied with the unit. Some don't come with flashings because they sit flush to the wall.

Some units do come with flashings. Also have a look under the house to see if all the duct has been hung as high as possible and there is no sagging duct work.Under the house will give you a clearer pic of what type of job has been done.

    All the best.
