    Default Ice in split system

This happened to my neighbour's split system yesterday.

Outdoor temp = 41 to 42 (all time record heat for Tasmania)

    Indoor temp (measured) 29

    Indoor temperature setting on A/C = 24

Now, the issue is that they noticed the coil was icing up on the indoor unit. I wouldn't have thought it ought to be doing so? Given that there's 29 degree air blowing over it, and that it was ridiculously hot outside, I'd have thought it would be struggling to stay cold and certainly not icing up?

The indoor humidity was measured at 15% with a fairly basic electronic device. Outdoors was 10% (Bureau of Meteorology data).

It's a Mitsubishi system and the date on it is 2006. It's 6kW (heating) capacity, not sure about the cooling specs.

They can ice up when the humidity is high or the unit is low on refrigerant.

Low refrigerant is what I was wondering about? It certainly wasn't a humid day that's for sure - very dry and we've got those awful bushfires as a result too.

If the refrigerant level is low, are there any other obvious symptoms? Specifically, I'm thinking that the system would transfer less heat (either in or out since it's a reverse cycle system) thus causing the compressor to run more than it otherwise would? If that's so then it would explain their high power bills
