Yeah, we have a much older cistern that has a central screw similar to that. Good for any such task, wear a rubber glove for grip. And only try to reverse the outer ring on this one
ok cool, will give it another got tomorrow see how i go.
tried turning this outer ring again, all the buttons turn with it, tried holding buttons from turning but always wanted to turn with the ring no matter what. pushed the buttons down to get more grip on the ring, same thing , buttons wanted to turn with it.
didnt force as didnt want to break it.
Does the cover jiggle a bit and not adhered with silicone.
Sorry, I'm out of ideas, but does it have a brand anywhere so you could perhaps Google the installation instructions?

Remove both buttons. Hopefully one or both will have a slot you can insert a flat blade in. You will need to press one button to get the first one out.
Once both buttons are removed you should be able to remove the center part. It might even have a screw fitting that was covered by the buttons.

yep it worked, buttons lifted out and screw underneath an off it came
