I think you could use a butt join if you did it over a bearer....
Dear Fellow DIYers,
For joists that have to be longer than 6m, what sort of joints you use ? As the Treated Pine is available only to a maximum of 6 m, I am wondering what is the best way to join two pieces ?
I have attached a PDF file with 2 drawings. To me Figure 1 seems good as the decking screws will be in one line. Any suggestions ?

I think you could use a butt join if you did it over a bearer....
Always join over a bearer (just making sure - the drawings don't show a bearer). Cut joists at 45 degrees on the vertical, put them together and jack nail both sides. Butt join would also work but the 45s give you more bearer surface to nail into. Either way, all pressure is down so you don't need the plate in Figure 1. Figure 2 works if you aren't concerned about the floor board nailing pattern.

Editing my previous comment, I didn't look close enough at figure 1 and now see it involves 'matched halves' / half-lap (whatever its called)
there's a lot more work in that than cutting a couple of 45s on a drop saw... to each their own
