Remove the slate, inspect what you have left, then make the decision to either remove the concrete or build the new deck on the existing concrete.
Hi folks,
We have a very worn porch made of slate that we cannot find a way to fill & seal. What we'd like to do is build right on top of this and turn the surface into a wooden deck. It would only be slightly raised, which is fine because it will bring it up to the house floor level.
What I'm wondering is, how can I slope the existing slate porch so that water that gets through the wooden deck can can run off (now that it would experience a lot less direct sunlight).
Should I add some sort of material on top of the slate to level it, or is there a machine I can use to essentially grade the slate porch? The top layer is quite brittle, but the whole thing is resting on (I think) essentially a mix of concrete and bricks.
Any suggestions much appreciated!

Sounds like you need some sort of thin screed bed and a waterproofing coat.
Remember if you don't sin, then Jesus died for nothing
Thanks so for that - they both sound like good options actually.
In terms of a screed bed, do you think that's the sort of thing that is fine to build up upon what's already there? There is room for the added height.
