    Default Best coating for us?

    Hi all,

We're looking at getting around 85m of NSW Blackbutt for our new home in a 2-3 months time.
We're not sure what is the best coating product to use.

I like it very glossy which I believe the Solvent/Oil products would be suite best but I don't want the timber to look 'yellow' and darken severely with age.

Bona Traffic was recommended to us as the best water-based product to use which retains the colour of the timber and has excellent durability, but it isn't very glossy and is a little costly.

    Can anyone recommend a product?

    Thanks!

After a bit of research I think Bona Mega gloss would be best for us. Should retain a glossy finish without going too yellow and a lot less odour than a solvent poly which will keep the wife happy.

Bona Mega Gloss has a reflective sheen of around 80% which is similar to a poly semi-gloss. It should also be accepted by the flooring manufacturer for use on a new floor as apposed to the solvent based coatings. If you're worried about durability and can afford it get a fourth coat applied. Ask the contractor to do it for the cost of materials and a case of beer as they will probably tell you it will be not required.
Also ask about the maintenance products - i.e refresh or freshen up. It will maintain the sheen for longer and extend the life of the coating.

Decided yesterday we are happpy with the gloss level of a solvent semi-gloss, but we don't want the odours of solvent.

Bona is quite expensive so I imagine a 4th coat would add a few dollars per sq/m
We'll see what he says when it comes time to get serious

Don't forget to ask about any warranty issues, either from the timber supplier or floor sander if you go down the path of solvent base poly.
