Smile Issue with my floating timber floor

    Hi all,

New member, first time poster. Hoping someone can give me some advice. I had floating timber floors laid about 2 years ago. In one section (on a step) the timber has discoloured (black streaks running through it) and has greyish bubbles appearing in the wood. There is also some oily residue coming through in spots. Any idea what could be causing this? I'm assuming the only remedy is to rip the boards off the step and replace them but don't want to do that if the same problem recurs. Any help much appreciated

Firstly 'floating' is an installation method, not a material so you will need to give us a little more information about the actual flooring.
And secondly a good pic or two would be great also.
I look forward to giving an opinion.

Can you rule out rising damp?

The last picture looks like damp. Is it soft? Is it an engineered timber board with a thin laminate bamboo on the top? It looks like the laminate is de-laminating from moisture which is the bubbles. Given its a step its definitely a high traffic area. If you tap it does it sound hollow? I would say you are never going to get that colour back so look at replacement options. Laminates on engineered flooring are only 2-4mm thick at best. On the old retro furniture is is less than 1mm so moisture is not friendly especially if its prolonged.

    Thanks sparkiecol,

I'm not sure - what causes rising damp and would be isolated like this?

    Hi grantbudd,

Not sure how thick the bamboo is. I bought it at Harvey Norman and I think it was around $65 sq metre. The dark bits aren't really soft but the bubbles are and when I press on them some liquid comes out

WoW. What a great advert for bamboo!

    A real moisture there.

The only solution is to remove and replace, but I'd find the source first.

my guess no underlay / plastic / liquid membrane over the step and there is some degree of mouister in slab
