    Default Rafter sizes

Hey guys i'm getting a lot of different answers from different people, websites etc.

    I am pitching a pergola, 4.5m wide 22.5*

Will 140x45 Treated Pine be enough for the rafters or should I jump up to 190's?

What size would you recommend for the edge/fascia beams and how do you work out what size to use for the ridge beam?? As far as i see it a bigger ridge doesn't do much except add weight.
    I normally use a 190 ridge with 140 rafters and 240 with 190 rafters.

Thanks in advance for your help & time!

Last year I built a fairly large hexagonal pergola. Best sources of timber size information were...

Design Pine web site (you can download their design data)

AS1684 supplements (tables of spans for different applications) they were fairly cheap from Standards Australia at around $10 or $20 per supplement.

Timber Qld Data Sheet No 19 (contains lots of other good stuff as well)

Blocklayer... doesn't give timber sizes but lots of other good stuff on lengths, angles etc.

    Good luck!
