Default Rain on untreated pine framing

    Hi All,

We are halfway building a "closed verandah" (2 walls will be the house, another wall built and the other open with blinds).

We have built the frame and ready to add the pine cladding, battens, insulation and Colorbond roofing. But while I wait for more materials and horrible weather to subside, I'm concerned about the rain that is coming over the next few days. There won't be any time to complete the roofing until then.

The beams and ridge are made with treated, laminated pine. The rest (rafters/collarties) are made with untreated pine. Is it a big deal to let the rain get to it for a few days? I ask this because it rained the other day and I noticed a few cracks in some of the rafters. During that time I had a tarp over most of the frame, excluding the area where the cracks formed. I'm only guessing the cracks were caused by the rain...

Right now I have a larger tarp that goes over the whole verandah frame... but... it's NOISY! I've done my best to secure it, but it's still too noisy and more wind it coming. And I don't want to piss off the neighbours for the next few days while it rains.

Should I not worry about the rain and remove the tarp?

    Thanks!!!!

If the weather is as miserable as you describe, wouldn't the neighbours have their doors and windows shut tightly, and be unlikely to hear your tarp over the cacophony of noise around their own buildings? I'd leave it unless it is likely to cause damage by acting as a sail.

Well, I can hear it from my own bedroom. It really depends on how bad the wind gets. Anything over 30km, it's really going to make a racket.

one good thing is when it does rain, it forms pools of water in the tarp between the rafters and holds it there and stops the tarp from moving around and being loud. I should have left the water in them! I might even pour a little water in them again. lol...

House framing get rained on all the time. Don't panic, it won't rot out overnight.

I expect you hear it like that in your bedroom because of structurally born noise. I assume the tarp is not connected to your neighbours' houses.

No I don't think that's it. It sounds like someone crushing a packet of chips (without the chips though). Unless structurally borne noise can sound like that... I dunno.

Go out into the street and listen from the same distance as your neighbours. Does it still like someone crushing a packet of chips? If not what you hear inside your place is structural, and don't forget that the sound will be much quieter inside your neighbours' homes than what you hear outside.

Leave the tarp up. It’s only a few days. Why not have a chat to your neighbour and let them know the situation.

Can you rope it down a bit more?

If it becomes a danger, take it off, but if you rope it through all the holes it should be Ok - but don’t rope anything that’s not solid!

Get the hose out and weigh it down. It's going to happen anyway...
