Default Bath to large shower conversion

    G'day all.

This is my first post. I am a 'first-timer' to renovating and I will be most appreciative of any helpful advice you may have .

I have a tiny bathroom that only fits a 1500mm bath, with a shower over the bath combination. My kids are much older now and the bath shower combo is past its use-by date!
The wall to wall (with a small window on the opposite wall) space is 1580mm. The tiles and built-in vanity have been removed and now the plumping and pipes are exposed. I do not plan to alter the pipes or drainage (too expensive).I want to remove the in built-in steel enamel bath from its cradle, which sits in a cut out floor. The house sits on stumps foundations.
I would like to remove the bath, replace the flooring to the cut out area, then replace with a 'walk-in' style shower. I thought the 'easy' and cost effective way to do this is to replace with a 1500mmx900mmx40mm marbletrend select shower base and fit shower wall panels, as I do not like tiles. Hopefully the shower head will be far enough away from the window.
To finish, add a large sliding clear shower screen 1550mm in length and butt it to fit the 1580mm space (there not enough space to open a pivot shower door). The bathroom will just fit a vanity and towel rail to complete.

I would love to know what others who are more knowledgeable think-is this a viable and sensible DIY project?

Thanks for any tips you might have for a 'newb' on a budget

If the old bath is set down (recessed) into the slab you may have a good base for a new walk in shower.

If on the other hand the slab is flat under the bath you can end up with just a 25 to 30mm step at the entrance.

The small window will also need to be waterproofed.

Location of the floor waste into the old bath outlet will be no problem provided yo can give the some fall.

Rather than a prefabricated, have you looked at getting the base waterproofed and shoer water stops installed? this will outlast a prefab base and look a lot netter and easier to keep clean.

    Good luck.

    Hi Oldsaltoz,

    Thank you for your post.
The bath wasn't on a slab, it was merely fitted in a cut out wooden floor and built-in that way.So When the bath is pulled out it will be open to ground below and will need to have the floor patched up or the whole bathroom floor replaced.
Although I really like your idea of getting the base waterproofed and having shower stops, it sounds difficult and expensive to have done professionally. Would you have any idea of the cost for my job? I am in near Melbourne airport, in the north, and it looks like there is only a contractor in the Western suburbs.
I have also read that walk in showers are very to difficult to DIY and I don't like tiles. I am going to do the walls with shower wall panels and the floor with aqua-step, as they are supposed to be waterproof.
    Thanks again.

Being above ground you will also have to waterproof the whole floor and install puddle flanges.

Discuss this with the waterproofer doing the quote, he can also waterproof your prefab base.

Sounds a lot like the bathroom renovation we just finished. We deleted the window altogether and don't miss it at all. A powerful fan helps with ventilation.
