    Default Bathroom Vanity Question

    Hi all,

I'm new here and this is my first ever post. Did a google search for help and found myself this very resourceful forum.

So, we are currently renovating our guest bathroom but because this property is going to be rented out at some point in time, we do not want to go all out and spend truckloads of money on the renovation. Instead, we will just be updating the fittings, units and tiles to keep the cost down.

We got a cabinet maker to come in and look at the 20 year old vanity and was quoted approximate $700 to redo the whole thing, carcass and all. We can't do the exterior replacement only cause the wood is swollen over the years and is in pretty bad shape. On top of this, we would also have to pay for a new basin etc.

On the other hand, we found an off the shelf vanity unit that cost half of the amount, including a moulded basin benchtop. The dimensions seem to fit into perfectly into the corner recess (see picture) apart from a filler strip on the right side of the old vanity unit (see picture). We talked to a plumber who said he can rip out the old and fit in the new one for us (for quite a good price comparatively).

Obviously, when I mentioned the off the shelf option to the cabinet maker, he just laughed it off saying that alot of people bought it and realise it never fits.

My question is, if we go on the off the shelf option (see the picture). Will the filler strip be a problem when the plumber come to fit the new off the shelf vanity or will that be coming off as well when he rips out the old one? Without the filler strip, this off the shelf vanity can pretty much sit flush with the wall (basin top is adjustable)?

Any help that you guys can offer will be great.

Oh using the same picture, is it going to be difficult to remove that gigantic mirror on our own (1200mm wide)? It's framed and we are thinking of taping the mirror with duct tape before trying to pry it out. If it's going to get too dangerous and difficult (we're really bad with DIY), then who should we be calling to remove it? Thinking of buying a cheap bathroom mirror from those wholesalers and installing it ourselves (or get a handyman who would) :P

    Thanks in advance!

    Default Just to add

oh.. just to add.. the off the shelf unit can have the drawers on either the left or right hand side. So if I have the drawers on the right, then we wouldn't need a filler strip to open the cabinet drawers / doors smoothly?

Any help would be appreciated cause I'm absolutely driving myself mental, measuring, thinking, dreaming (and a nightmare).. in the event that the off the shelf option doesn't work out..

Its hard to say 100% that the off the shelf unit will fit but usually the only issue is it physically fitting and the plumbing so if your plumber is a good plumber and he can see he can make it work then Id say go for it.

Re the mirror depending on its mounting it may be easy it may be hard - have a look under the bottom of the frame and look at the top - that may give you some clues as to how its mounted. Some are clipped were you just grasp the bottom of the mirror and push it up and it has spring loaded clips on the top and some Ive seen are double sided taped to the wall - if this is the case then use lots of duct tape in a cris cross and straight pattern across the glass and try and peel it off! But be careful it may break!! Dont forget it may also be on hooks so once again just lift it off. You could also just get the handyman to remove and replace the mirror.

Hmm... the handyman option sounds really good.. I think we may just go with that if it's not budging.. not worth killing ourselves over a mirror.. lol

I have also attached a few more pictures in a words document format with all the measurements that I can possibly think of.. so if some of you can take a look and see if it fits then it will be good.. I emailed the plumber the same doc too..

Personally I'm feeling confident that it should fit.. but then again.. I'm not an expert (don't even know how to drill holes!!) so..

    Hi,

My word, that is the Nomad vanity which I have seen all over the place. Don't know where it originates but we ascertained you can fit the top slightly off-centre if you want and it is hardly noticable. It is just stuck down to the carcass in the model we saw.

In other words you don't need a filler strip

    Cheers

From your pics (good pics too BTW) the only issue I can see is the tile height as the new vanity is taller meaning you will need to remove tiles below mirror and re tile to suit new vanity, the good thing is you may be able to make this a bit of a feature and re tile using a modern style tile to match the vanity or use a contrasting color etc. The new mosaic tiles look good but if your going to try and tile yourself dont get them!

All the other dimensions look fine to me always a bit hard to be 100% sure without actually seeing it but it looks OK from here!!

    Good Luck

    Mike
